Microfilm access is available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

There is Elec. - Plbg. - Htg. on commercial only.

Commercial back to the 50s if property was in the city limits, sparse if it was in the county.

Residential - started microfilming in 1978 - custom homes only. Residential custom homes we have on microfilm since 1978. We do not have all residential master plans until the 1980s.

Where do I send my letter of credit?

Land development handles letters of credit for developers or call 385-5979.

My neighbor put up a fence one foot inside my property, what should I do? Can he put the rough side facing me? 

The person putting up the fence can face it any way he wants. If he installs the fence on your property, you need to contact an attorney. 

What do I do if there is asbestos in a house I want to demolish?

The Health Department will instruct how and where to dispose of asbestos. Paperwork is required to get a permit from the Health Department. If the homeowner is demolishing his own home, he needs XCU insurance (explosion, collapse and underground). 

All demo permits require:

Health Department approval
Utility cutoff paperwok
X, C, U, insurance

Who handles bridges?

The fire department is the only department involved unless it is city property. City engineering does not get involved unless it is city property. They are not involved on private property. 

What is a live load and a dead load?

A live load is load that entails furniture and moveable objects within the house. A live load is 40# per square foot. A dead load is the load of the floor and structures that cannot be changed. A dead load is 10# per square foot. This is for residential and floor loads only. Loads are different for a commercial project. 

What is a covenant and where do I get one? 

Covenants are rules and regulations for a neighborhood. You can get one from a title company or the neighborhood association. 

My gas dryer is vented into a crawl space, is this safe?

No - have a contractor vent to outside - you need a permit for this. 

Property tax questions are answered by the treasurer's office

How do I get a variance request submitted to the building committee? 

Variance requests are considered by the building committee. They meet the 1st Wednesday of every month - variance requests must be in writing 15 days prior to the meeting. 

Where do I get underground gas storage tank information?

Fire prevention - 385-5959.

Who do I call for a street name change? 

City planning at 385-5905 or Department of Transportation at 520-6460. 

Do the plans on microfilm show drainage plans? No.

What are the hours of operation?

We are open from 7:30 to 4:30; plan check, permit counters and anything that has to do with money shuts down at 4 p.m. 

I want to build my own home . Where do I start? 

We have a homeowner handout. 

How many inspections will I need for my deck?

Usually a footing, frame and final are all required inspections on a deck.  

Where do I get driveway inspections or information (residential) in the county? 

Department of Transportation for El Paso County. 

Who do I call for free lighting of natural gas appliances? 

City Gas at 668-7354 

Who do I call for early loud construction noise in my neighborhood?

444 -7899 (7AM TO 7PM).

Who determines an occupant load? 

Front counter or plans checker.
