Policy regarding Open Records Requests
State law does not make it mandatory that requests under the open records act be made in writing. Department policy, however, is that all such requests be made in writing and be specific in regard to the information requested.
Individual division heads may use their discretion responding to requests that are very straightforward and clear;
Requests involving legal or personnel issues, as well as those of a complex nature, must be approved by the Building Official before release to the public.
Open Records requests from the media MUST BE coordinated with Public Communications.
Documents that do not fall under the Open Records Act should be marked "draft" so it is understood they are works in progress and not eligible for release to the public
Information which the public has a legitimate right to see must be readily released.
Fees will be charged based on staff time spent at the rate of $40.00 per hour.
